Cross Lanes Organic Farm Shop and Café
In 2011, Peter Coverdale switched from contractor to customer and fulfilled a life-long dream to build his own eco-friendly, organic farm shop and café at Brignall, Teesdale, County Durham.
A Grade II listed building, Elwick Windmill was built in the mid 19th century and is located about half a mile south west of Elwick, near Hartlepool.
The windmill had fallen derelict and was in a state of disuse due to serious ingress of water. Coverdale Hughes were commissioned to repair the property and provide the conditions for conversion to a four-bedroom private home.
The building’s interior was chopped out and the structure lime pointed with mortar to protect the masonry from decay and further water ingress. Significant repairs were carried out to the original brickwork, including replacing friable bricks with reclaimed handmade bricks of identical texture and colour.
Final restorations were completed in 2008 with a new cap roof and fan tail. It is now a privately owned residence incorporating the internal workings of the original rig.
This project was achieved with our expertise in the following areas.
